Titanic Quarter, Belfast - 12h February 2011

ROVER 75 AND MG ZT CLUB,
VISIT TO TITANIC QUARTER
12h February 2011

In February we attended a meet held at Titanic Dock and Pump House, Belfast in our Rover 75. This event was organised by the Northern Ireland Region of the Rover 75 and MG ZT owners. It was not exclusive to Rover 75 and MG ZT cars, it was open to any Rover car. Cars in attendance included P6, P5, Rover 75's, MG ZT's, Rover 25's and a Lotus (it has Rover K Series engine).

We met up at 12.00 noon in the car park where cars were scrutinised, running problems discussed etc. As always there was plenty of general chat and great banter. 16 cars attended and despite it being the middle of February it remained dry, the sun even shone, a novelty in Northern Ireland.

At 3pm some those in attendance took the guided tour of the Titanic Dry Dock and Pump House. The tour of the Dry Dock (the last place Titanic rested on dry land) really gives you a sense of the size and scale of the Titanic. Inside the Pump House you see the massive pumps, the tool shop which includes some of the original tools from the shipyard. includes an audio visual display which makes the viewer understand how difficult the working conditions were for the workers at Harland and Wolfe.

The picture below is of a very small portion of the bow which was recreated for a recent television show.

The picture below shows part of the dry dock. Note the small figure dressed in yellow, this is a life size model of a person, see how small it is in comparison to the walls of the dry dock.

The picture to the below shows the control panel for the pumps.

The picture below shows some of the huge pumps. Did you notice the figures dressed in yellow? These are life size models of workers, look how small they are compared to the huge pumps.

This is a very interesting and informative tour, full of facts and details about the building of the Titanic and is a highly recommended tour if you are visiting Belfast.

All in all a super day out with a bunch of like minded people.
